Dogs are a valuable tool in policing and can take on various roles, including:
- General purpose dogs.
- Cash, drugs and firearms detection dogs.
- Victim recovery dogs.
- Digital detection dogs.
- Sexual crime detection dogs.
Prior to starting their formal training, a puppy will go through a phase known as "puppy walking" and, if successful, they will progress to formal training. Formal training doesn't start at an exact age, but is usually between the ages of 1 to 2 years.
Police dogs are generally obtained from private kennels, but should you wish to offer a dog to the police, it is advisable to contact the Dog Unit at your local police force for more details. See Q727 to obtain the contact details of your local police force.
