Q200: What is the Crown Prosecution Service?

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is a Government Department that is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in England and Wales. They do not act for the police or for the complainant but act independently.

CPS have responsibilities for giving advice to the police on cases put forward for prosecution, reviewing those cases and then, if suitable for prosecution, preparing the cases and representing the Crown at court.
